New Hyde Park Coffee Shop emphasizes sustainability, zero landfill waste

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City’s first stand-alone Mother Earth Coffee shop officially opened this week inside the International at 3504 Gillham giving the local coffee brand its first retail location outside of a hospital.

The new 2000-square-foot coffee shop has an intentional focus on sustainability and leaving as little impact on the environment as possible. Offering three large bins for recycling, glass and compost, Mother Earth Coffee hopes to eliminate all items going to a landfill.

“From the start, we developed Mother Earth Coffee knowing each and every single thing we would buy and how it would be disposed. We believe building a recycling program and ensuring sustainability in our business processes is the responsibility of our brand,” said Scott Presnell, director of marketing for Mother Earth Coffee.

Soon, Mother Earth Coffee will begin a community-recycling program. Neighbors can collect coffee grounds for flower beds, use burlap from coffee bags for ground cover to use in community gardens, and will be invited to participate in a community organics recycling program. The café will begin to donate its day-old bakery items to local charities.

The coffee shop faces Gillham Road and is inside the newly renovated 1960s building called The International. The location serves both residents and businesses within the retail and apartment complex as well as the neighboring community of Hyde Park and beyond.

For the past two years, the mixed-use building has undergone a complete redesign and renovation transforming it into 56 apartments on the four upper floors and businesses on the two lower floors.

The new Mother Earth Coffee will offer multiple types of seating, Wi-Fi, a community room, fireplace and an interior decorated with all-natural products inspired by the brand’s mission. Polished concrete floors and exposed concrete ceilings, wooden and steel accents and Mother Earth’s signature orange color create the space for the large coffee shop with seating for more than 60 people.

“We’re a good fit for those who value wellness, quality and freshness. The neighborhood is full of single and young married professionals who are seeking a homey community meeting place and Mother Earth Coffee brand is the perfect match for this community,” said Presnell.

With a name like Mother Earth Coffee, only natural materials are used in the growing and production of coffee crops. Mother Earth Coffee uses fully-certified and organic processes in the storage, handling and roasting; and all processes are conducted right here in Kansas City.

Direct trade is also key to Mother Earth Coffee’s standards. The company only purchases coffee crops directly from the farms at or above sustainable pricing. Mother Earth Coffee prides itself on its ability to show its customers a truly traceable, sustainable product from business conducted directly with the farmers.

“Mother Earth Coffee works to establish strong relationships with the small family farmers producing this very high quality product so that our customers can enjoy the finest quality coffee in the world. We consider these farmers our partners. And even more importantly, we work to support a sustainable livelihood for their families and communities,” said Presnell.

The company has developed five distinct coffee blends: Organic Medium Roast, Organic Breakfast Blend, Organic Dark Roast, Organic Decaffeinated and Organic Espresso.

Mother Earth Coffee has created a menu for its first corporate owned, stand-alone location. Options will include:

  • Flavorful, certified organic brewed coffee, plus organic cold brew blends
  • Tasty organic espresso-based drinks including lattes, cappuccinos and mochas
  • Specialty drinks such as real-fruit smoothies, protein smoothies caffeccino’s (blended ice coffees) organic teas, chai and more
  • Fresh-baked pastry items such as croissants, scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, etc.
  • All-day treats including cookies, brownies and house-made granola bars

The Mother Earth Coffee location at Armour and Gillham will be open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The company opened two locations in cooperation with Shawnee Mission Health as well as a full-service coffee shop at the hospital’s Prairie Star location at K-7 and Prairie Star Parkway in western Lenexa in late 2015. These Mother Earth Coffee locations currently serve about 3,000 employees plus hundreds of patients and visitors every day at the hospitals.
